Effectiveness and safety of electrical cardioversion for acute-onset atrial fibrillation in the emergency department: a real-world 10-year single cen…
2019
OBJECTIVE Despite limited evidence, electrical cardioversion of acute-onset atrial fibrillation (AAF) is widely performed in the emergency department (ED). The aim of this study was to describe the effectiveness and safety of electrical cardioversion of AAF performed by emergency physicians in the ED. METHODS All episodes of AAF electrically cardioverted in the ED were retrieved from the database for a 10-year period. Most patients not already receiving anticoagulants were given enoxaparin before the procedure (259/419). Procedural complications were recorded, and the patients were followed-up for 30 days for cardiovascular and hemorrhagic complications. RESULTS Four hundred nineteen eligib…
Conductive and Capacitive Properties of the Bipolar Membrane Junction Studied by AC Impedance Spectroscopy
2001
The complete ac impedance spectrum of four bipolar membranes is analyzed both theoretically and experimentally taking into account both ionic transport and water dissociation together with the structural aspects of the bipolar junction. A theoretical model based on the Nernst-Planck and Poisson equations for the conductive and capacitive properties of the junction provides a qualitative description of the bipolar membranes for a broad range of electric currents and temperatures. Special attention is paid to the characteristics of the bipolar junction structure and the contact region between the two ion-exchange layers. It is observed that the effective area of this region increases with the…
Parked Electric Vehicle’s Cabin Temperature Management Using Photovoltaic Powered Ventilation
2017
Abstract This paper presents how the electric vehicle roof integrated photovoltaic (PV) powered ventilation can be used for controlling the climate of the car. In this work, a fully-functional Renault Zoe electric car has been used to conduct experiments for PV powered ventilation. These experiments have been part of a wider research project of testing electric vehicles of the Edinburgh Napier University’s Transport Research Institute. The present work illustrates performance evaluation of electric car ventilation, when roof-mounted PV modules were used to operate DC powered fans for ventilation. It was found that the motor-fan selection for removing the warm air from cabin space is of impo…
A comparative study of the behaviour of silver, copper and nickel submitted to a constant high power flux density
2005
In this paper, we present a numerical simulation of three metal cathode (silver, copper and nickel) submitted to a constant flux power flux density ranging between and . The goal is to compare the interface evolution (vaporization and liquefaction rate, appearance time of liquid and vapour, energetic repartition) to predict the behaviour of the cathodes during an electric arc.
Quantification of intracranial contribution to rheoencephalography by a numerical model of the head
2000
Abstract Objectives : Partial contributions of intracranial and extracranial circulation to rheoencephalography (REG) remain uncertain. The main goal of this work is to determine theoretically the capability of REG techniques to reflect intracranial blood flow. Methods : Head and current injection electrodes were computationally modeled to assess REG sensitivity to brain and scalp conductivity changes. Data obtained were related to tissue perfusions to calculate the partial contribution of cerebral blood perfusion to REG I, REG II and monopolar REG and to assess their amplitudes. Results : When REG I and monopolar REG were used, the theoretical maximum of intracranial contribution was reach…
Measurement of cloud point temperature in polymer solutions.
2013
A temperature-controlled turbidity measurement apparatus for the characterization of polymer solutions has been instrumented and set up. The main features are the coupled temperature-light transmittance measurement and the accurate temperature control, achieved by means of peltier cells. The apparatus allows to measure cloud point temperatures by adopting different cooling protocols: low rate for quasi-equilibrium measurements and high rate for detect kinetic effects. A ternary polymeric solution was adopted as case study system showing that cooling rate affects the measured cloud point temperature.
Enhanced thermoelectric performance of PEDOT with different counter-ions optimized by chemical reduction
2014
This work reports on the synthesis of the intrinsically conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with several counter-ions, ClO4, PF6 and bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BTFMSI), by electro-polymerization and its thermoelectric properties. We show that, depending on the counter-ion size, the thermoelectric efficiency of PEDOT can be increased up to two orders of magnitude. A further chemical reduction with hydrazine optimizes the power factor (PF). By changing the counter-ions, we were able to increase the electrical conductivity (σ) of PEDOT by a factor of three, while the Seebeck coefficient remains at the same order of magnitude in the three polymers. The best…
Modified Donnan phenomena in polyaniline with poly(vinyl sulphonate) chains
1993
We develop a physical model, based on the modified Donnan phenomena ideas introduced previously by the authors, to describe the acid doping of the conducting polymer polyaniline. The theory is motivated by the experimental work of Asturias et al. [Ber. Bunsenges. Phys. Chem. 95, 1381 (1991)]. Good agreement between theory and experiment is found.
Cations mobility and water adsorption in zeolites
2002
As already pointed out [1], dielectric relaxation spectroscopy can be a convenient tool for probing ion dynamic in solids which depends on i) the structure in which ions are embedded and ii) the nature of the interaction ion/network. Consequently, the results obtained from this technique can be used as a data base for theoretical studies which goal is to calculate the ion binding energy and to simulate ionic displacements. Inversely, theoretical calculations are essential for confirming the experimental data and more particularly the method which is used for analysing the dielectric experimental response.
Triboelectrification of nanocomposites using identical polymer matrixes with different concentrations of nanoparticle fillers
2021
In this study, we investigate triboelectrification in polymer-based nanocomposites using identical polymer matrixes containing different concentrations of nanoparticles (NPs). The triboelectric surface charge density on polymer layers increased as the difference in nanoparticle filler concentration between the two triboelectric layers escalated, despite the fact that the polymer matrix was the same in both layers. This effect was observed in tests of various polymer types and filler NPs. Our mechanical experiments and finite element analysis simulations confirmed that polymeric triboelectrification is related to the surface viscoelastic deformation that occurs during mechanical contact and …
